In the latest round of internal coms from the BBC, we’ve just been told by a very senior manager that the BBC should be doing more editing ‘in house’. It’s a great idea, and one that we in Birmingham have embraced. After all, we are the only BBC centre that has rolled our post production into our production department, meaning that nearly all our programmes have all their editing done in house, just as we are being told is the right thing to do.

Sadly the BBC plan to close the factual department in Birmingham and move it lock stock and barrel to Bristol, a centre which does all its post production externally.

If editing in-house saves money and ‘consolidation’ of bases is planned to do the same, then they are consolidating in the wrong place.
